Jeff and I have not been on a trip away alone since at least before Jade was born. We are the type that enjoy taking our kids places. I have always felt that it is important to get away alone, but have let that slip since we have two kids and a tight budget. It’s hard to find someone to keep both kids and hard to justify spending money without them. Jeff had a work trip this past Friday in Beaufort, SC and I was off work so we decided to combine work with pleasure. He would be reimbursed for the miles to and from Beaufort, so we would only have to pay for Beaufort to Savannah. (good deal) He had points on his hotel rewards for a free night a the hotel we liked near River St. (SCORE!) Nonni picked up the kids late Thursday night and Jeff and I headed out early Friday morning. As expected, we were not even to Augusta and Jenna called saying she was throwing up. We put the petal to metal to get further away discussed coming back home, but decided that it was a stomach virus and by the time Jeff was finished with his job and we drove home, the virus would be over. Besides, we didn’t want to risk getting home in time for Jade to get it, it appeared Jade was unaffected. Jeff had made nice dinner plans that were non-refundable, too. Fortunately, Jenna was better quickly. Never fails!
Meanwhile, the weather was AWESOME!
I took the next few pics on the first stop of our trip. I sat on asphalt while Jeff worked. By views are documented below. It was also quite loud because Parris Island was training some fighter jets overhead. I was still all smiles because the weather was perfect!
We arrived at our hotel by 2pm. Soon thereafter I started laughing because we were both slumped on the couch watching TV in peace. Jeff had it on Dr. Phil, of all things! We didn’t care. We were quiet and together.
For dinner, Jeff surprised me with a diner cruise on the Savannah Riverboat. This is right up my alley! I went on one with the BETA kids in Louisville this past summer, but was excited to get to be with Jeff. We walked around River St for a while before dinner.
We picked out a place for Saturday’s lunch, found Nonni’s pralines, and listened to some street musicians.
I have seen a LOT of street musicians in my lifetime. This was the first time I have seen a grown man play a recorder! I thought being a 5th grader was a requirement to play the recorder. We did throw a dollar in his jar.
At 6pm, we boarded our window seat dinner boat and set sail shortly thereafter.
As expected, Jeff became part of the entertainment. He is like a magnet and ALWAYS gets chosen to participate. The DJ called him the Youth Pastor. I have no idea why.
Our hotel was right under this beautiful bridge. I have never crossed this bridge before. I have always wanted to, but it leads to SC, and I never go from Savannah to SC. This time, we entered Savannah from SC, so I got to cross it. It is really high and so beautiful!
I am always amazed at the cargo ships. I always wonder if they are loaded with something that will end up in my house.
Ahh, the cobblestones. So nice, but I worried about the old people who could easily fall.
Friday night we were back at the hotel by 9:40 and were leaving the hotel before 9am the next morning. Signs of being old! We drove down to River St and parked right on the river. (You KNOW we were out early if we parked ON THE RIVER!) We walked to City Market and explored some of the Historic District.
I think I wore a permanent smile!
We climbed up these stairs when we went from River St to Bay St, but there was NO WAY I was going down them. They were SO tall and steep!
See how tall? Just look at Jeff’s leg.
It’s a sin to go to Savannah and not get pralines.
I took this pic from our parking space. Told you we got out early.
For lunch, we ate at shrimp Factory on River St. I had a yummy seafood strudel.
We came home after lunch. It was a WONDERFUL quick weekend away. I wish we could have stayed 2 nights, but Nonni was DONE! We were missing our kids, too. Thanks Nonni for keeping the girls.

Looks like you had fun! I saw Nonnie and the girls in Publix Sat afternoon, she was tired, I think!! LOL Those steps remind me of the last time we went there with a big group of adults, one of the guys was very intoxicated, and took a tumble down them, it was funny, since he was not hurt, but could not get out of bed the next day! LOL
