Playing with Dolls

Kids will make a liar out of you every time! On Friday when I picked Jade up from daycare, her teacher asked if Jade played with dolls at home. I answered, “not much.” Ha! Since that answer, she has played with dolls constantly! Babies are napping, eating, strolling everywhere I turn! This started even before we took her to Babyland General.

CPK of Yore

All this talk of Cabbage Patch Kids got me thinking of my old dolls. I have VERY few toys of mine. I mean VERY few! I could fit them ALL in one copy paper box. Nonni was notorious for throwing away our toys when we weren't looking. When I was in early middle school, I caught on to this, so I got sneaky. You see, we NEVER used our attic. We always used the basement, instead. One day when I was home alone, I snuck my adoption dolls, cabbage patch kids, a couple of stuffed animals, and some special books into the attic. No one ever knew it. I would check on them from time to time, and when I moved to college, I took them with me. Sly, huh?
After we went to Babyland General, Jenna asked me to get mine down from upstairs. Admittedly, they are a bit ratty looking from years of being in the attic, and many more years of rugged play, but here they are:
Abigail: I got Abigail for Christmas in 1st grade. Mama’s friend Joy made this doll. She is still in her original dress. (minus the bottoms) She has a few drops of chocolate ice cream on her, too. This would have been 1981.

No Name: This is actually Nonni’s doll. Nonni made this one. Impressive huh? She sat on the bed for many years, and was never played with. She only looks rough from being in the attic. She, too, is in her original clothes. In fact, she has never been out of her original clothes.

Adele Jenny: I called her Jenny. This was my first Cabbage Patch. I got her 3rd quarter of 3rd grade for making all As on my report card. You see, CPKs were SO hard to get that Christmas. I think people were killed trying to buy them. Nonni was NOT the type to run down anyone over a doll, so I did without a doll on Christmas, and got one a few months later when report cards came out. (Picture it: nonni lined up at 4am waiting on the doors to open to get a doll- NOT! hahahahaha) In fact, Joy found Jenny. I harassed my teacher regularly to make sure my grades were staying high enough to get this doll. That was 1984, and I still have the doll, so I’d say it was worth it.

Bruce Wyatt: I got Bruce for Christmas 1984. 4th grade was the year that I got EVERYTHING Cabbage Patch. In fact, both of these dolls are STILL today wearing diapers from that Christmas morning. The Macs actually gave me Bruce. I wanted a bald headed boy.

The funny thing is that I changed my dolls clothes over and over and over and over, but all 4 of these dolls have ended up in their original clothes. I have no idea how that happened.
Now for the sad part: I did not keep Jenna’s Cabbage Patch doll. Sad smile She was just not that into that doll, and I guess I tossed it. Argh! I do have her Twinn doll.
Sad part 2: At press time Todd’s doll, Lightening, made by Nonni is missing. It has been sighted in recent years, and we suspect he is living in Oregon with his rightful owner.

Babyland General

On Saturday, January 14, Jeff had a quick trip that he needed to make to Cleveland, GA. When he asked if we would like to ride with him, I told him that I would like to surprise the girls with a trip to Babyland General Hospital- home of the cabbage Patch Kid. We didn’t tell the girls until we pulled into the parking lot. They have recently built a new hospital, and the place is HUGE! When we walked in the lobby, the first thing I said was, “This smells like my 4th grade Christmas morning!” (for the record- that was the year Santa loaded me up with Cabbage Patch toys. Oh, and I’m a keen smeller.)
I LOVED looking at all of the soft face dolls. Nonni made a few of these dolls. After looking at the CPK originals, Nonni was pretty darn good. I think she missed her calling. (ok, so maybe her first doll, Lightening, was a bit askew, but the rest were good!) I will do a post on those soon-  Nonni, txt me a pic of Lightening.

We enjoyed looking at all of the personalities of the dolls. The hairstyles alone were hilarious. So fun! Everything was interactive for the children.

I love how the hospital has their staff dress in scrubs. The dolls are treated like real babies. Every so often in the Cabbage Patch, a new baby is born. The doctor comes out and helps to deliver the new baby from Mother Cabbage.

See the screen behind the doctor? Well, he does an ultrasound on Mother Cabbage to determine if the baby will be a boy or girl. The screen turn pink for girl, and blue for boy. We were there for the birth of a girl. Poor Jeff, he can’t even get a boy at the Cabbage Patch.
He checks everything out…

and then delivers the baby…

We don’t have good pics of the dolls that we bought, but Jade got her first CPK. She got one made at the hospital, but with a plastic face. (We were not paying $$$ for the cloth faced ones!) She named her Victoria Sophie, but calls her  SoSo for the most part. (Sometimes Victoria)
Jenna got a smaller doll since she doesn’t play with them as much anymore. She chose a doll from the Asian Cabbage Patch Smile (aka less $$) called a “Surprise Baby”. In the box you couldn’t tell if the baby was a girl or a boy. Three guesses what she got….ok, fine only 2 guesses….GIRL!
and she came with a name…Regena Melba. (We got a kick out of that name. Jenna calls her Re.)

It was a great day.

4 Wheelin Adventure

MeMe and Pappy gave Jade a  Powerwheels 4 Wheeler for Christmas and most days since then have been cold, rainy, or busy, but today was BEAUTIFUL and I was not about to let it get by without some 4wheelin adventures. Jade has previously enjoyed driving around the backyard, but today I opened the fence, and turned her loose.

She was very nervous, but I encouraged her to just follow me. We climbed the big hill behind the house…..

and even made a stop at the playground. In fact, we stopped on the way up the hill and again on the way down.

We finished our adventure by driving around the side and front yard. She was very cautious of every step of the way. We have a very dangerous yard between the pool and the road, so we have scared her of playing outside without direct supervision. I was right beside her, and I still had to keep encouraging her. That is a-ok with me. Better safe than sorry. She enjoyed her adventure, and I have to say, she is an excellent driver. She drove right through the gates without even getting close to hitting them. (She has a helmet, but I forgot to put it on her. oops)
