MeMe and Pappy gave Jade a butterfly garden for her birthday. We ordered the caterpillars and she was SO excited when they came in the mail. She recognized the box right away!
We watched the caterpillars crawl for a few days. We read a book about metamorphosis over and over. Did you know that none of the new literature calls the silk thing a cocoon anymore? It’s a Chrysalid or a Chrysalis now. I knew that was an alternate name, but I have read several books, the literature with the butterfly garden, etc., and cocoon is not to be found. Hmmm.
Anyway, within a few days, the caterpillars climbed to the top of the jar and started forming chrysalids. As instructed, we removed the paper and pinned it to mesh. We are now waiting for our butterflies to emerge.
Stay tuned!

Don't shake them. They are very fragile now. Silk worms spin cocoons. What is caterpillar poop called?
Love you, Nonni
